Ms Royal continues this delightful series with a book driven by believable, well developed characters and a satisfying plot. The locale includes a fascinating look into medieval English life. I look forward to the next installment.

Not up to expectation.....

I have truly enjoyed the historical aspect of Royal's novels with the mystery component as icing on the cake. However, I found this newest effort to be weak in its main plot and heavy with subplots. In fact, I may have missed the boat entirely in determining just what the focus was. I would like to have seen the Jewish component expanded and felt new character development was short changed. Unlike her previous novels, "The Sanctity of Hate" was too scattered for my liking and I missed the good, bad or indifferent relationships and interactions with the existing characters, there were some but...... I missed them.

I'm a Norwegian writer, living just outside of Oslo, Norway. I write mainly science fiction, but I also try my hand at fantasy. In my writing I try to combine my interests in science and politics with psychology (which I incidentally have a Master's degree in - never thought I'd use it in this way!). I think my diverse interests and background gives me a few valuable perspectives that enhance my writing, and although my main literary interest lies in the scifi and fantasy sphere, I enjoy a good thriller or horror now and then.

From my reviews I learn that different readers enjoy different aspects of my books. When I was a kid, I used to draw cartoons and make up all kinds of stories. It still took many years before I learned one can actually reach an audience all over the world, and even longer before I actually finished a book. Good book, will read the rest of the trilogy

I enjoy apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic type stories, especially with a good SciFi bent. This looked like it was going to fit the bill, and didn't disappoint. The author took a slightly different tactic than many, with a lot of emphasis on the failing governments of the world and how those failings play into the efforts to save some of the human race.

There is less "technical details" and more "people" details, with good characterizations and dialog. At times I wished there was a bit more background and detail, but I like a rather "deep" book at times that might be boring to many.

The pacing was good, with enough suspense to make me keep turning the pages (I stayed up past my bedtime to finish it).

Note that I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.

Big concept executed poorly

As first in the trilogy I am afraid it will not motivate me to read the remaining two. The writing comes across as that of a very green novice who had an interesting idea but could not convincingly deliver it. The writing is a bit juvenile which, but for the occasional use of the f-word, I would categorize it as YA fiction. No strong protagonist emerged until fairly late in the book.

PRO
1. Interesting concept, though one that has been treated (somewhat differently and better) by others before.
2. Interesting political context hypothesized but one not fully developed. It was necessary, however, to make the story somewhat plausible.

CON
1. Writing style: way too much narration used to provide background of characters and situations. In some cases the investment (when made) is lost by elimination of a character.
2. Politics: unrealistic behavior of the world outside the US, and even within the US. Unrealistic to think the dooming trajectory of the Devastator would go unnoticed and un-analyzed by a large part of the world for so long.
3. Many technical problems: a) slingshot effect around Jupiter adding more than 1000 times Jupiter's orbital speed to that of the spacecraft (impossible), b) a man tethered to a spacecraft coasting in free-space becomes unhooked and starts drifting away from the spacecraft with an INCREASING speed (no mechanism for acceleration provided), c) a spacecraft is coasting along at 25% the speed of light and upon approaching the target solar system is able to fully brake using only “magnetic sails" (unexplained) - the only known mechanism that could affect braking magnetically would require a magnetic field some fifteen orders of magnitude greater than that of our own solar system.

The author apparently also writes fantasy. I recommend he stick to fantasy where the laws of the known universe are freely ignored.

Calling an editor...

This book is similar, very similar, to When Worlds Collide, which--despite being terribly dated and limited by the social constructs and science of its era (1930s)--basically got the story done right. We now have sky-survey telescopes like WISE that essentially film the sky. Far more powerful survey scopes are coming online in the next 6 years or so that should even be able to find the hypothesized 9th planet, if it exists, which will be incredibly faint and slow moving. So, in the future they will not even be able to spot something the size of a rogue planet coming from another system? The reason no such telescopes exist is that future humans gave up astronomy and telescopes after Mars colonization failed. Seriously?!?!?!?!

Here are some of the book's problems:

1 - Bad science, too many to list, but most of them are jaw-droppers. For those of you who think I'm too picky, this is Science Fiction. A rogue planet would have been naked-eye visible for a long time before it hit Mars. We see Mars without a telescope, don't we? And just so you know, the Jupiter gravity-assist would not get a spaceship anywhere close to relativistic speeds, much less 25% the SOL. The spaceship's braking mechanism also is scientifically absurd. In a novel of manners or romance, this might be more forgivable but this is science fiction.

2 - Humanity gave up astronomy and space science? War, maybe, perhaps even Pop-Tarts, but space? Yet the world is able to assemble a craft capable of going to a system 40 light years away? Without telescopes and astronmers, and for that matter telescopes vastly advanced over what we have now, how (pray tell) would we be able to pick out a possible habitable planet? It took almost 10 years to get a little tin can (Apollo 11) to the moon and back. But we can design and build a 1,600-person interstellar spaceship and all its systems and propulsion in 12 years?

3 - A good novel shows, not tells. This one relies almost to exclusion on narration, or as some call it, description. This passive approach leads to readers scrolling forward for action or dialogue (well, I did), for something besides exposition and explaining.

4 - The characters are shallow and poorly developed; some very stereotypical types. Many of the conversations are inane and unlikely. The political conversations and dynamics are laughable. And there are too many characters. Even Tolstoy couldn't handle that many.

5 - The book develops in fits and starts that make it hard to follow. Threads are started and dropped. I'm not a big fan of outlining and planning every little thing in a book, but in a story with this many moving parts it probably is unavoidable. I urge the author to consider it in the future.

Lots of potential here, though unrealized, and the story in its essentials--rogue planet gonna destroy Earth--is a sound one. I will not be reading the sequels, and I seriously doubt anyone will be reading this one or its series in 10 years. One star, I'm afraid.

A Monumental Collision of Magic, History and Science

This is not your ordinary story about witches, vampires and daemons!

Diana Bishop's famous ancestor was executed for being a witch. As a heart-rending consequence of Diana's parents' mysterious deaths, Diana has vowed she will live totally as a human, denying her identity as a witch with both usual and unusual powers. Dedicating her life to logic and ordinary living, she is now a history scholar doing research on alchemy texts in the Bodleian library at Oxford. Upon receiving a requested text called Ashmole 782, she realizes either the book is spellbound or there is something about this book that connects with her hidden witch powers. Add to that the reactions of suddenly appearing witches, vampires, and daemons whose animosity and threatening looks and words make Diana's wish for normalcy an illusion she can no longer ignore.

Into the midst of this reality arrives a handsome, extremely intelligent and old vampire, Matthew Clairmont, who is supposedly pursuing his own research as a geneticist. Initially disliking and avoiding his presence, Diana finally begins to realize he is protecting her from direct attack by the hordes of persons appearing daily in the library who are insisting she recall the text they are desperate to obtain. Then he begins to appear during her running and rowing exercises which seem to be the only way she can stop her natural abilities from emerging with perilous effects on herself as well as others.

Why is Matthew so attracted to Diana and what is behind the interest so many have in this mysterious text lost for centuries which has appeared and again disappeared after Diana's innocent unbinding of its pages? Finally, when several close calls with death frighten Diana into realizing her lack of control, she accepts shelter first with Matthew's vampire family in France and then with her own witch family in America.

A Discovery of Witches is so much more than just a supernatural story! Yes there are adventurous thrills for those who love the proverbial accounts of such creatures. But here is an intelligent consideration of the essence of origins, differences, genetic mating and consequences, shared powers defying definition and classification, versions of history holding secret and amazing phenomena, relationships of enmity forced to unite under common needs - both good and evil, the quintessential realities behind the search for the Philosopher's stone or alchemy, and so much more.

Add to that a sweet, dangerous romance all the more real because of what seems to be its doomed end, and herein is the perfect combination, preciously difficult to adequately encompass in any brief review. This tale is a smart, tense, provocative, and enchanting read you will not want to end and will be relishing long after the last page is turned. This reviewer is so looking forward to the sequel to this amazing novel which will be a best seller!!! Absolutely delightful and impossible to put down!

Witches, Vampires, and Demons, OH MY

Book One in All Souls Trilogy
I found this book to be slow. Yes, Ms. Harkness is introducing us to the characters and some of their history. We are introduced to witches, deomans, vampires, and warm-bloods—good and evil. Ms. Harkness sets us up for the search by Diana (witch) and Matthew (vampire) and a host of others for a lost book: Book of Life.
I heard about the books from a FB sister who said she had not expected to like the books. Based upon the first half of the first book, I was not interested in continuing. But I’m glad I did.

Not a story I'll remember or care about next week!

While I take issue with several things about this book (and the series) I DID enjoy the story enough to stick it out to the end. Basically I've read (and stopped reading) much worse! The issues...there were times I couldn't tell who's head I was in and at least 3 separate times that she changed point of view in the middle of a section. The tension didn't last long enough to feel real past the 1st 1/3 of book 1. Predictable plot points and character issues left unresolved (too many to list). I kept waiting for several questions to be answered in the last book...but unless there is a 4th book coming I'm thinking I'm S.O.L. The ending of each book was only mildly satisfying for the reader...especially the last book. I made the mistake of buying them all separately...well jeez I now realize I paid $45 for 3 mediocre books...shame on me. I really kept expecting something more to happen considering the number of really good reviews. Each book just got more mediocre than the last one.

Money, markets and manipulators

A well written tale of greed and power. Entirely believable with lots of twists and turns, this book shows that financial markets are only as stable as the people that manipulate them..... a gripping story that sweeps across continents from the heart of London to the slums of Brazil. Greed, money, banking, a love interest and eventually following your convictions, what an entertaining read.

The story is intriguing and entertaining. It consumed me with its twists and turns. Only right that it had a happy ending. In fact, I have read several of Michael Ridpath's books and I love them all.

Nick, a former Russian studies professor, takes on a job in the high world of finance, despite no background or previous job experience in the bonds and trading industry, but his buddy Jamie works for Dekker and manages to get him an interview. After going through several staff, Nick ends up in a room with Ricardo aka the Marketmaker. The firm specializes mainly in trading of bonds in South America. A couple of days after joining the firm Nick is sent with Isabel to Brazil where she's working on a deal to get infrastructure to the favelas, basically hovels or tent cities. Never really clarified what the financial benefit is to the firm, but they go to Rio only to discover that a competitor has edged Dekker out of the favela deal. Ricardo flies to Brazil and after speaking to the media manages to kill the deal all together. On a subsequent trip Nick and Isabel are kidnapped but he manages to escape. The rest of the novel is spent mainly trying to negotiate Isabel's release and a lot of back room financial deals.

The novel started out slow. The perfect type of novel to read at bedtime when it only takes a couple of pages to fall asleep. After the action started in Brazil the novel picked up and moved along at a good pace and was hard to put down. The novel was written in the first person, and Nick the narrator, was not the Marketmaker. It was just a bad title choice. The book was well written, a good plot, lots of intrigue, good dialogue, and strong characters all helped move the book along. Even though it just wasn't my kind of book, it's still worth 5 stars.
