Just plain fun! A Must Read

After a sample, I simply bought the trilogy rather than one book at a time. I am glad I did. This is not a group of three stand alone stories. It is one complex and very enjoyable ride. The characters are well drawn and it is easy to root for them (or not as the case may be.) The story is simply a very fun roller coaster ride. Loads of fun!

A Jurassic Park in miniature

In reading this posthumous book by Crichton I could not help but notice the parallelisms with “‘Jurassic Park”‘. In this book the size matters, too (à la Godzilla). Sure, the size is different, but not the proportions. If in “‘Jurassic Park”‘ they have been able to bring back to life the dinosaurs and then lose control on them, in “‘Micro”‘ a revolutionary technology is able to shrink humans so that insects and birds become proportionately larger and dangerous as dinosaurs. Again a sabotage leads a group of people to deal with the creature in comparison to which they are small and almost helpless. Here too, the group, as the story goes on, increasingly tends to become smaller, until only a few survive.
Although this book was completed by Richard Preston, Crichton’s hand is evident. This long and exciting adventure is addictive. The desire to return to read is very strong. But at the same time the adventure itself is an excuse to show us the charming and ruthless world of small animals, especially insects. Crichton teaches us a lot about them and with great care he imagines how life would be for a human if they were as small as an insect, how the force of gravity would act on their body, the enormous difficulties they would face in moving even for short distances, the terrible dangers they should face. Although the miniaturization technology is not really explained, and there are some aspects that even the characters fail to comprehend (how can miniaturised human cells have a biochemistry that enables the characters to take water and food?), Crichton, to make everything even more credible, quotes a study, which seems very real (but you never know with him: he manages to make us believe anything is real), about the effect of magnetism on the height of the people as the basis for the technology used in the novel. The assumption remains very imaginative, but the purpose of the story is to tell the science of micro-world and therefore it is not necessary that the premises are completely realistic.
I admit that I was annoyed at some point about the death of a character, and I was so taken by the story that I barely noticed a romantic and far from unpredictable development (which I liked very much) was about to come, but this is indeed a great book with an open ending which, unfortunately, will never have a sequel.

Mistake

C'è un errore fondamentale questa volta. Dalla descrizione del processo, pare che la miniaturizzazione non modifichi il numero di atomi di un essere ma soltanto lo spazio tra nuclei ed elettroni. Così un uomo di un millimetro continuerebbe a pesare il suo peso originale e non come un insetto, rendendo tutto il romanzo semplicemente di fantasia, nemmeno lontanamente plausibile. Questa volta Michel non mi ha convinto, ed era l'ultima.

The inspiration for Eyepennies came from a song, by American singer-songwriter Mark Linkous, on the album It’s a Wonderful Life. Linkhous had depression and and was close to death at least once. His suicide was in 2010. The song is on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7cXtu3-u6c.

'EYEPENNIES' IS A SONG WRITTEN AND RECORDED by Mark Linkous, an American songwriter, musician and producer, who recorded and performed five albums under the name Sparklehorse. The last of these, Dark Night of the Soul, co-written and produced with Dangermouse, saw Mark collaborate with an eclectic mix of performers and artists, including Vic Chesnutt, The Flaming Lips, and David Lynch. It was officially released, after contractual problems had caused a delay, in 2010. 'Eyepennies' appeared on the 2001 album It's a Wonderful Life, which was my first encounter with Sparklehorse's music. I saw them late in 2002 supporting Bonnie 'Prince' Billy at a gig in London. Throughout the hour long set, Mark's vocals were probably the quietest I'd ever heard at a live gig. This had the effect of causing the audience to concentrate all the more intently on his hushed, elusive lyrics, as we strove to understand the mysterious truths they allowed us to glimpse.
Some people interpreted the title of It's a Wonderful Life as an ironic riposte to those who perceived of Mark as being preoccupied with mortality, madness and the dark side of human nature, but I prefer to take him at his word. This despite his struggles with depression, addiction and the long, painful recovery from an all too close brush with death in 1996 while touring the UK to promote his first album Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot.
That Mark recovered from that, and the near loss of both legs, spoke volumes about his determination to see the rich beauty and weirdness in life. His fascination was not with death but with the simple, mundane pleasures we so often take for granted. Dogs, trees, sunshine, birds, horses, dusk; he loved motorcycles, old songs, old engines, the American south, its dark history and literature. His music and lyrics - spooky, elusive, surreal, and raw - are imbued with these things, though the songs speak to us obliquely, filtering his ideas and passions through the prism of an extraordinary life. They serve as surreal reminders of things we've forgotten, and reveal to us something of the dreams we never understood.
Mark Linkous took his own life in March 2010. That he fought on for fourteen years after his first close encounter with death is a testament to his strength and zest for life. We are left only with his eerily beautiful and haunting songs, and for that we are blessed.

About the Author
Mike O'Driscoll lives in Swansea. When not writing he works with adults with mental health problems. His fiction has been published in TTA publications Black Static and its predecessor The 3rd Alternative, Interzone, and Crimewave, as well as in Fantasy & Science Fiction, Albedo One, Back Brain Recluse and a whole bunch of long since deceased small press magazines, may they rest in peace. He's also had stories in numerous anthologies including Inferno, The Dark, Lethal Kisses, Off Limits (all edited by Ellen Datlow), Gathering the Bones (edited by Ramsey Campbell & Dennis Etchison), Darklands and Neonlit (both edited by Nicholas Royle), The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror #17, and two volumes of Stephen Jones' Mammoth Book of Best New Horror. His essays on David Cronenberg and David Lynch appeared in The 3rd Alternative, and his writings about all things horror, Night's Plutonian Shore, featured until recently in Black Static. Contemptible trash - fans of Sparklehorse stay FAR away

Amazon needs a "zero stars" rating. This supposed tribute to Mark Linkous is the most insensitive, sickening, ill-conceived and morally bankrupt thing I've ever encountered. Horrifying - as much for the story as for the manner in which the author has chosen to try to corrupt and poison the memory of a great artist. I will be trying to get my money back from Amazon.

W. T. "Roadblock" Harrell grew up in Jacksonville, Florida.  An admitted adrenaline junkie in his early years, he raced on NASCAR-sanctioned tracks in Florida and Georgia with many of the great drivers from that era. Fast cars led to fast motorcycles, and Tony joined a 1%er motorcycle club in 1971.  In the years to follow, he lived the high-speed 1970s lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.  When that lifestyle caught up with him, he wound up serving thirty years in federal prison.
The world raced forward during those three decades, but because of his long confinement, RoadBlock remembers the towns and events as they were: before cell phones, personal computers, the internet, and bumper-to-bumper highways. His untarnished--and unvarnished--memories proved to be a great resource for this fiction series about the adventures of Joe Wilson and the notorious Regents Motorcycle Club.  RoadBlock's personal expertise provides the reader with an extraordinarily authentic look at those times.

A compelling and exciting ride.

Some writers are degreed professionals and write based on research. Others write from the heart, based on their own life's experience. The Probate is obviously an example of writing, not just from the heart, but of the writer's tearing a piece of his own heart out and giving it to the reader. Mr. Harrell gives us the story of a good ol' boy from Florida, circa 1970, haunted by a past, as he discovers a love of motorcycles and the brotherhood of serious bikers. If you have even a passing interest in motorcycles or the '70s, the last gasp of American freedom, you won't be able to put this book down. This is one of the rare books where I glanced at the page numbers often, hoping I had a lot left to read. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and hope I won't have to wait long.

Road Block is a Goddamn Legend

I know Road Block. He was a Legend when I first joined another 1%er motorcycle club in the late '70's, and he was still a Legend when I ran into him at the Federal Prison in Mississippi in the 2000's. Few people know the history of the 1%er bike clubs on the Gulf Coast. Road Block does. Back when Jacksonville was the most hateful place on earth; next to Houston; Road Block and his Brothers would rock with the cops (have near death fist fights). Road Block was the Boss in Tampa and his motto was Play Hard! Those men would run full bore at each other and crash. It is a sound I will never forget. Watching them fight was a thing of beauty. I never saw them give up or lose a fight.
While in prison the Feds feared Road block and set him up with a fake indictment to add 5 more years to his sentence. He fought that too. And when it was obvious that he was right some Federal Judge in Jackson, Mississippi just tossed the case in a desk drawer and refused to rule on it. But still Road Block never gave up the fight. True 1%ers never quit. Road Block is a true 1%er.
At his side he has had a wonderful woman to devote herself to him. Thank you Baby for all that you have done.

Authentic Biker Fiction - Unbeatable

Authentic biker fiction is a description in words. Once you have read Roadblock's work you will know an appropriate review should include at least a hearty shout. Read it and learn what it was like to be riding the highways and biways before the RUBS overran Harley-Davidson. Great introduction to Hebrews

The commentary on Hebrews by the late F.F. Bruce is written in a clear and concise fashion and is accessible to the layperson desiring a good overview of the book of Hebrews. Technical matters, especially those involving the Greek text, are placed in footnotes. These footnotes are especially beneficial to the person with a working knowledge of NT Greek.

The introductory material provided by Bruce is also worth reading. Bruce does an excellent job of discussing the suggestions regarding the authorship of the book, and concludes that we cannot know for certain, other than that Paul is not the author. His discussion of the canonicity of Hebrews is also excellent.

I own several commentaries on Hebrews, and I consult this one more than the others.

Well Done

Richard Knaak always does a good job on these books and this one is no exception. It is somewhat irritating that it is being done in several small segments instead of all at once. It would have nice to read the entire storyline as opposed to just a few chapters.

Quick read

I enjoyed this even though it was short. Cannot wait until book II comes out next month. I'm a huge lore fan and have all the novels, comics, short stories, graphic novels, etc and this was fun. If you are confused with this book, read Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects and then read the short story Charge of the Aspects. This short story can be found on the wow website under lore and short stories. I hope that helps and you all enjoy this as much as I!

Suddenly I understand the antipathy for Knaak's Warcraft books

I'm writing this review having just finished the fifth part of the series/novel chunks/whatever you want to call it, and I'm looking at the work as a whole. I came into it as a fan of Knaak, having enjoyed his work since the Dragonlance and Dragonrealm days. I've often heard people denigrate him for his Warcraft novels, which puzzled me. I wasn't pleased with some of the stuff in Wolfheart, but having now read Dawn of the Aspects, I understand why people hate on his books so much.

From the start, his characterizations are awful and inconsistent with other presentations of the characters. I haven't read the older Warcraft novels, so perhaps how Kalecgos was portrayed matches how he was at some point in the novels, but it certainly doesn't match where he and Jaina ended up at the end of Tides of War, which this follows both in publication date and the lore timeline. The little we see of modern day Alexstraza doesn't really match where she should be either. She attempted to withdraw from the world following Korialstraz's death. For her to do so again so quickly (especially quickly for a creature who has existed for at least ten thousand years) is ridiculous.

There are logical inconsistencies that are obnoxious as well and threw me out of what little immersion I was able to grasp from the story. For example, it's declared that the dragons are now infertile. Why would five individual dragons losing extra special powers (that of being the Aspects) render the entire species infertile? They are not the only dragons around, nor is it suggested that they are. The Aspects were not the only ones of their flights to reproduce either. It makes no sense at all. The various wars of the time during World of Warcraft has decimated their numbers, to be sure, but to suggest that there will be no more fertile eggs laid ever, from a species that was previously extremely fecund (witness the vast number of whelps present in the game), is ridiculous. There are other examples, ranging from small, but extremely stupid (Kalecgos finding the vision of another dragon ripping hungrily into a fish to be disturbing. He's a predator too, he'd eat in a similar fashion!), to huge (the big bad is described as having numerous functional limbs emerging from his body, but those left no evidence such as bones behind).

The conclusion seemed rather abrupt and rushed. I was 64% of the way through the fifth part when I realized how close I was to the end with no conclusion in sight. The story ends at about 92% (a huge section at the back of each part is given to repeating a bunch of stuff about World of Warcraft, which seems a bit silly, since who else would be reading these books?) It feels a bit off to have almost 10% of each chunk we are paying for not be part of the story.

While I appreciated the book being split up into parts instead of being asked to pay the ridiculous $10-15 they demand for each full e-book all at once (yeah, it ended up being about the same pricewise, but it felt better in little chunks), I would recommend staying far, far away. The time travel tropes are way overdone in Warcraft and the associated novels anyway, and this is so poorly written that it's not worth the frustration trying to make sense of it (hint: it doesn't) brings. It's sad to see what is overall such a noble group of beings in WoW treated so poorly both in writing and the lore it establishes.
