Good fun

Islands In The Sky is certainly not on par with such later Clarke masterpieces as 2001 or Rendezvous With Rama, nor is it intended to be. This very, very early Clarke novel is just about the only work in his entire canon that seems to have been written with the teen audience in mind. The protagonist is of the "coming of age" age that is commonly featured in such stories, and Clarke uses this to narrarate the story in a slightly condescending, naive tone that is appropriate for such a character. It's quite different for Clarke, who usually writes in such a philosophical, poetic style. It reminds a lot of Robert A. Heinlein's many excellent juvenile novels. As such, this book, while far from being Clarke's best work, this book serves as an excellent introduction to Arthur C. Clarke's incomparable canon, or to the wonderful world of science fiction.

The Big Sky Wheel

Let us start with an oft-voiced criticism of Arthur C. Clarke's _Islands in the Sky_ (1952): It is not up to Clarke's usual standards. I am sure that a knowledgeable science fiction fan could readily rattle off half a dozen novels by Clarke that are much better pieces of writing. I won't bother to try.

But that being said, is the novel really all that bad? If we look at Isaac Asimov's Lucky Starr series (1952-58) or James Blish's _The Star Dwellers_ (1961) and _Welcome to Mars!_ (1967), we see some juvenile fiction that is fairly weak tea. It's not really _bad_, mind you. But it is just... routine. Clarke's novel is much better written, and it may be fairly counted as one of the best of the Winston line of books for young readers.

The novel invites comparison with another excellent Winston juvenile-- Jack Vance's _Vandals of the Void_ (1953). Vance's book is unabashed, colorful, melodramatic space opera. Clarke's book is the opposite-- a low-key, quiet, realistic treatment of day-to-day life on a space station. Clarke was faced with a problem in writing such a book. If you are going to be low-key and realistic, how are you going to make your story interesting to young readers? There is in fact nothing more boring than a thinly disguised science lecture.

Clarke's solution was to set up a series of events that _seem_ to be mysterious and melodramatic and then to playfully deflate them. Thus, there are moments when it seems as if you are reading about space pirates, aliens, and deadly atomic missles. But in fact, something else is going on instead. Yet the seemingly mundane explanation manages to be just as interesting as the melodramatic scenario; and step by step, it reveals a bit more about the nuts and bolts of life in a space habitat.

Clarke was faced with a problem. He worked out a solution to that problem. He wrote smart and he wrote well. Do you want to gripe because he didn't turn out a classic?

A Classic of Its Type

Islands in the Sky (1952) is a science fiction story about the travel adventures of a teenager. Roy Malcolm is a typical boy who really wants to go into space. He becomes a contestant in a Aviation Quiz Program on television and wins first place. When asked where on earth he wants to go, Roy answers "the Inner Station". Despite quite a few objections, the sponsors finally agree to send him into space.

Roy must first pass the medical tests required of space workers. Then he rides on the Sirius into orbit. Finally the spaceship docks at the station and he is towed aboard.

After meeting Commander Doyle, Roy is introduced to the ten apprentices who are currently in training. Tim Benton, the senior apprentice, gives him a tour of the working station and a view of the Residential Station, a hotel for passengers in transit. Then Tim allows Roy to accompany him outside.

Wearing a spacesuit for the first time, Roy is initially terrified by the great fall beneath him. Then he is fascinated by Earth in the sunlight. Then he is overcome by the splendor of space as darkness momentarily surrounds him. He realizes that these few experiences have profoundly changed his life.

Roy spends much of his time with the apprentices, both during their training and in their free periods. He is the butt of Norman Powell's practical jokes, the wrestling partner of Ronnie Jordan, and a witness to the "space pirates" encounter by Peter von Holberg and Karl Hasse. The latter adventure turned out to be the beginning of a space movie.

Roy went on to even more adventures. He helps medevac a sick man to the Space Hospital, meets an "alien monster", and passes out from oxygen deprivation. He also gets to travel in a runaway rocket past the Moon.

This novel is a good example of a space adventure juvenile from the fifties. Unlike the space opera of that era, it is hard SF based on the science and technology of the time. While it is out of date in several respects, it still depicts an advanced milieu very much beyond our present achievements.

Highly recommended to Clarke fans and to anyone else who enjoys classic hard science fiction adventures.

About the Author
Arthur C. Clarke was born in Minehead in 1917. During the Second World War he served as a radar instructor for the RAF, rising to the rank of flight-lieutenant. After the war, he entered King’s college, London taking, in 1948, his Bsc in physics and mathematics with first class honours. One of the most respected of all science-fiction writers, he has won Kalinga Prize, the Aviation Space-Writers’ Prize and the Westinghouse Science Writing Prize. He also shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the screenplay of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was based on his story, ‘The Sentinel’. He has lived in Sri Lanka since 1956.

The Twilight Years

Grand ideas of great scope were the hallmark of 'The Golden Age of Science Fiction' and this book certainly fits that mold. Set in the very far future, so far that many main sequence stars have started to die, this is a story of two very different paths that two different groups of humans have taken to the puzzle of existence and life. In the city of Diasper, we have a totally enclosed and static society, where people live for a thousand years, then store their memories for some later computer controlled reincarnation, where anything outside the city is not only totally ignored, its very existence is practically denied. At the other extreme is Lys, where man is just one part of the world of living, growing things, where bio-engineering has been raised to such an art it is buried in the background, and humans have developed telepathic talents. These are the last two areas of civilization on an Earth that has otherwise become a desert, where even the oceans have totally dried up.

Against this background we find Alvin, the first truly new citizen in Diasper in seven thousand years, born without any memories of prior existences, to whom, without any preset thought biases, all things are open to question. When he starts to question the origin of Diasper and ask what exists outside the city, he is met with rebuff and ostracism. Persisting in his questions, he eventually finds a way to leave Diasper and travel to Lys. The things he learns there and the additional questions provoked by this knowledge eventually lead to things far beyond the Earth and a complete revision of 'known' history, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.

While Alvin and the other characters are reasonably portrayed, this is not the strong suit of this book, nor will you find a great amount of 'hard' science gadgets and plot devices. This is rather a book that will make you think about the long term purpose of man and his place in the universe. There is a painted picture here of just what the ultimate end point is of pure technological development and the stifling effects such an environment has on people, strongly contrasted with an alternative development line focusing on human mental capabilities and its negatives. Both thematic sides are held up beneath the strong lights of hope, pride, and ambition.

There is a feeling of near poetry, a total 'sense of wonder', that pervades this book, a feeling that will captivate and invigorate the reader, that will take him far outside the everyday concerns of today. In certain areas, the great weight of not just millennia, but billions of years of history will press upon you, where the discovery of ages old items will be as much of an adventure as watching our first manned lunar mission.

This book was a near total rewrite of "Against the Fall of Night". While the basic scenario is the same between the two books, the endings are dramatically different, and actually present a different outlook on man's purpose and his part in the grander scheme of things. I have never been able to decide which of the two versions is better - but that just means you should read both, as they are both fully deserving of your time and attention.

Perhaps my favorite SF novel

Many years ago when I was quite young (11 or 12 perhaps) I first read this novel's sister book, Against The Fall Of Night, on the recommendation of my mother. I loved it and soon moved on to The City And The Stars, which I enjoyed even more. Over the ensuing twenty years I have re-read it several times, and cannot think of any SF book that I have consistently enjoyed more.
This is not "gadget SF", where the plot turns on clever use of some little-known technical gizmo. Nor is it "hard SF" that delves deeply into the domain of hard chemistry or physics to drive the story. Instead, this is a "big picture" novel.
A million years pass. A billion years. What happens to the human race? What social impacts might occur after every question we know how to ask has been answered? How might people live when advanced science begins to resemble our conception of magic? This is speculative fiction at its finest, and my favorite Clarke novel.

Clarke's masterpiece. An incredible work of imagination.

This is the story of the human race as it exists about a billion years in the future. A more ambitious premise for a novel is almost impossible to imagine, but Clarke pulls it off brilliantly. This is an incredibly imaginative work, and before it is over it offers a sweeping vision of human destiny. And all the while it does so by telling a good story too! This is a novel, not a work of philosphy.
This is the story of Alvin, the first child to be born in over a million years in the great city of Diaspar, man's greatest and last city. But Alvin is different than his peers, because he alone in all of Diaspar is not pathologically afraid of the notion of leaving Diaspar, or of venturing into outer space. And thus Alvin's explorations, and the novel's story, begin. A great yarn with a startling and inspiring ending.

Yet, There Comes a Season remains hopeful that, through stories such as these, we may know that war is never the answer.

John Kachuba is the author of twelve books, a Creative Writing instructor at Ohio University and Antioch University Midwest, and a member of the Historical Novels Society. He is also a member of St. John’s Unitarian-Universalist church in Cincinnati. A portion of the proceeds from sales of There Comes a Season are donated to the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Wounded Souls Struggling to Cope

Kachuba offers five well written short tales of US individuals suffering collateral damage from different military conflicts from 19th Century battles with native Americans, to the 1960s intervention in Vietnam and the recent war in Iraq. Memorable characters include the brother of a soldier who took his own life, native Americans at odds with the "English" and veterans and a prospective draftee afflicted by Vietnam. Well developed plot lines create suspense that sustains interest and provokes reflection. Highly recommended.

Another intriguing read from Kachuba

John Kachuba delivers it again with "There Comes a Season". I was hooked from the first page and as I "swiped" my Kindle screen for page two, I was glad I had purchased another download from the author. John has a way of drawing you into the story so that you are more than just a bystander. I enjoyed this one and look forward to getting the next one!

Elegi este libro para adentrarme en Lean pero desde una perspectiva original, no re interpretada por nuevos modelos simplificados y me permitió conocer el corazón de Lean, desde la fábrica Toyota en adelante.
Absolutamente recomendable para lectores de habla española, pues usa un lenguaje ingles bastante simple y sin aforismos.
Realmente disfrute la lectura y me entusiasmo a profundizar mas en Lean!

My mom fell in love with the characters in book 1. I got the entire series for her and she couldn't put them down. Great character development, great historical Civil War settings, great Christian fiction. I plan on getting her all of Mr Morris' books.

Can Marina really love Todd?

The Nelson sisters have laughed about the $1,000,000 their recently found grandmother has offered for one of them to love and marry her great-nephew-by-marriage, Todd Aston III. Why would anyone marry for money only? What's wrong with him that money has to enter into marrying him?

Julie, the oldest sister, is off to China with her fiancee, Ryan Bennett, on a business trip and asks Marina to help with the wedding. Ryan also wants his cousin Todd Aston to help.

It's unbelievable but Marian and Todd hit it off and do make much progress with the wedding plans before their physical attraction gets in the way or does it get in the way? Wonderful story telling makes this so good!

Ms Mallery has written a great ending to the THE MILLION DOLLAR CATCH/Nelson sisters stories. I can't pick my favorite of THE SUBSTITUTE MILLIONAIRE (Julie & Ryan), THE UNEXPECTED MILLIONAIRE (Willow & Kane) and now Marina & Todd's book. All 3 are also HOT and very entertaining books.

I enjoyed reading this book (my favorite in the series) and I suggest reading the other two books in this series first. I read this book during an unexpected 7-hour flight delay and it made the wait tolerable.

I thought the characters were likeable, even though the hero was a bit arrogant and had a problem trusting women. There were several parts in this book which had me laughing out loud.

I recommend all the books in this series.

the milliion dollar wedding

of the three this is the one i liked the least. throughout 3 books i still don't like todd ashton III or grandma ruth. marina seems way to together for todd, but like romance novels everywhere, love does indeed conquer all. while marina and todd are planning julie's wedding (also dumb---what first time bride doesn't do her own wedding?)they overcome family animosity, todd's commitment issues, and grandma ruth's meddling to fall in love. of the 3 millionaire books this was the least workable for me. but read it if only because it's the end of the trilogy.

England to Sydney, Australia.
This challenging feat of aviation would see him pass through 19 different
countries, and fly over 23,000 km for 257 hours. He would fly over incredibly
hostile terrain along with long sea crossings and deserts, while also encountering
testing meteorological conditions on the way.
As well as having to struggle with the day to day setbacks that being in a
wheelchair brought along, Dave Sykes would become the first paraplegic to
fly from Britain to Australia in a microlight ever, routing through the following
countries:
England -- France -- Italy -- Malta-- Greece -- Egypt -- Saudi Arabia -- Qatar
-- Dubai -- Oman -- Pakistan --India -- Bangladesh -- Myanmar (Burma) --
Thailand -- Malaysia -- Indonesia – Australia
Australia – never done by a Paraplegic in a microlight, never mind solo,
