Charming tale of risk-taking and true love

Since her mother suffered a stroke, Marisa Orlando has lost her home and been forced to move into a deteriorating apartment. But at least the apartment is a wonderful community. She has friends there, a support group. And all of that is going be destroyed by gentrification--by Lee Ramon's plan to turn the apartment into expensive condominiums. Marisa can't afford the down payment on a condo--not with so much of her salary going to pay her mother's hospital bills.

Construction manager Lee Ramon has sunk a good part of his fortune into this conversion--and needs to complete the building on time and on schedule is he isn't going to lose everything. Thanks to the partners he took on to finance the deal, he is constrained on what he can do and who he can hire. But all of a sudden, his worst problem seems to be the sexy spitfire down the hall. Marisa pushes him to look for ways that her community can be maintained. She doesn't seem to understand that bringing the building up to code is expensive--that if he did nothing, her building would be condemned within a few years and that community would be shattered anyway. And with the attraction Lee feels for Marisa, he wants to find a way to make her happy--but not if it means losing everything.

Marisa is always quick to jump to the most negative conclusions about Lee--but it takes her friends to break it to her that she's sabotaging herself--she's so busy protecting her heart that she won't give him a chance. Certainly he does things to her heart that she's never experienced before. Even when he agrees to a 'sweat-equity' plan that will let the residents work off some of their down payments, she insists on looking for the trick, for Lee's way of making his bottom line.

Only when everything seems lost--for both Lee and Marisa--are the two finally willing to listen to their hearts. But then, is it too late?

Author Fran Shaff adopts a highly approachable style in telling a charming story of misunderstandings. Marisa has been hurt before, lost everything, and is afraid to commit--even when true love comes along. Shaff does a fine job balancing Marisa's emotional responses with Lee's more pragmatic, but no less heartfelt concerns and needs. The resolution offers a bit of a surprise, but an ending that offers hope for the future.

EVER SO HUMBLE is suitable for both young-adult and adult romance readers.

Ever So Humble

If you have yet to read, Ever So Humble, by Fran Shaff, I must tell you that you are in for a treat. In fact, an incredible treat! Once you enter the world of Marisa and Lee, there are obstacles at each turn. Not only are they challenged at giving in to their feelings for each other but also with the obstacle of trying to keep what they feel is important to them. Lee with his renovation projects and Marisa with her concerns for her neighbors and those close to her. The story was so believable. The characters so true to life. Each character in their own way caring for the things that matter in life. Ms. Shaff has written a story with heart. One that will make you stop and think. One that will make you feel good inside. I also loved the way that Ms. Shaff incorporated secondary characters in the story line. It gave more meaning to the story. And the way she had Marisa care for her mother was indeed so true to life. Ever So Humble is indeed a wonderfully written story. One that deserves ten stars!! It is a truly a great story, one that will touch your heart in so many ways. Ever So Humble would make a great gift for anyone anytime of the year. It is a story that you will remember for years to come. A charming story for all ages.

This is a 'feel good' book for readers of all ages. With 'Ever So Humble' Ms. Shaff has shown how people can work together to solve modern problems. Her characters are three-dimensional and easy to like. They face troubles and strive for solutions. Shaff also shows that love can come along when you least expect it!

Twenty-five millions of whites have banded themselves in solemn conclave to keep four millions of blacks in their chains. In all grades of society are to be found men who either hold, buy, or sell slaves, from the statesmen and doctors of divinity, who can own their hundreds, down to the person who can purchase but one. Were it not for persons in high places owning slaves, and thereby giving the system a reputation, and especially professed Christians, Slavery would long since have been abolished. The influence of the great >honours the corruption, and chastisement doth therefore hide his head.> The great aim of the true friends of the slave should be to lay bare the institution, so that the gaze of the world may be upon it, and cause the wise, the prudent, and the pious to withdraw their support from it, and leave it to its own fate. It does the cause of emancipation but little good to cry out in tones of execration against the traders, the kidnappers, the hireling overseers, and brutal drivers, so long as nothing is said to fasten the guilt on those who move in a higher circle. The fact that slavery was introduced into the American colonies, while they were under the control of the British Crown, is a sufficient reason why Englishmen should feel a lively interest in its abolition; and now that the genius of mechanical invention has brought the two countries so near together, and both having one language and one literature, the influence of British public opinion is very great on the people of the New World

I love Jerry D Young stories!! It has the right balance to light and heavy... as in it's not too fluffy but it's not going to give you nightmares. One thing about the stories is that the person always has a bunch of money and knowledge. Hhmm.. I hope if something ever happens then I am with someone like that cause I have neither lol

Terrific value

The complete works are presented in translation with both prose and poetry translations of the Amores and Metamorphoses. As well the Latin texts are provided with a link to their English versions. Background information about the poems and Ovid's life is a useful inclusion. As with all the Delphi Poets series, the book is beautifully illustrated in colour and the text is very easy to navigate. If more stars were available I would give them.

I purchased this for the sake of the Latin text. Layout and navigation are wonderful. The Latin Kindle dictionaries work on this text unlike some of the other Ovid texts. What's there not to like?

Great book with so much well-researched detail. Buy it!

I was a teenager when Lonnie Donegan first appeared on the scene. My first live concert experience was seeing the Chris Barber band at the Royal Albert Hall in 1956 with the Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group playing in the interval session. I have the original LP beside me as I write this and I like to think I can hear myself, and my rowdy friends, shouting and applauding after each number! When Lonnie left the band to make a career as the King of Skiffle me and my mates, like thousands of British teens starved of music, started our own skiffle group. The book so accurately describes the times and the pent-up need for kids to discover their own kind of music and Patrick Humphries clearly did an amazing amount of research in putting this book together. For me it is so personal because I lived in the same East End of London area where Lonnie and his family lived. As teenagers, we found out where Lonnie and his wife lived and actually went there and knocked on his door. It was the day before he was due to leave for America for his first trip to promote "Rock Island Line". His wife, Maureen, said he was "having his tea" but she went upstairs and came back with some autographed photos of him for us. Not quite the same as meeting "the man" but we were close. If you're of a certain age, and especially if you followed the skiffle craze in Britain in the mid-50s, then this book is a must for you. It took me quite a while to read it as I kept going off on "Google-ing" tangents when Patrick wrote about a certain concert or an album I hadn't heard of. I thought I had almost everything Lonnie recorded but the author's detailed accounts led me to purchase some stuff from overseas to add to my collection. (Oh, I live in the USA nowadays and still play music, including skiffle songs, regularly. It's still an addiction!). Like so many of my contemporaries of the time I thank Lonnie Donegan for leading us all in the direction of American blues, folk, country music, etc., and I especially want to thank Patrick Humphries for putting this wonderful book together. Buy it...you won't be disappointed!

But as Starfleet rebuilds itself, factions within the Typhon Pact grow restive, concerned about their own inability to develop a quantum slipstream drive to match that of the Federation. Will leaders such as UFP President Bacco and RSE Praetor Kamemor bring about a lasting peace across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, or will the cold war between the two alliances deepen, and perhaps even lead to an all-out shooting war?

Raise the Dawn
After the disastrous events in the Bajoran system, Captain Benjamin Sisko must confront the consequences of the recent choices he has made in his life. At the same time, the United Federation of Planets and its Khitomer Accords allies have come to the brink of war with the Typhon Pact. While factions within the Pact unsuccessfully used the recent gestures of goodwill—the opening of borders and a joint Federation-Romulan exploratory mission—to develop quantum-slipstream drive, they have not given up their goals. Employing a broad range of assets, from Romulus to Cardassia, from Ab-Tzenketh to Bajor, they embark on a dangerous new plan to acquire the technology they need to take control of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. While UFP President Bacco and Romulan Praetor Kamemor work feverishly to reestablish peace, Captains Sisko, Jean-Luc Picard, and Ro Laren stand on the front lines of the conflict...even as a new danger threatens the Bajoran wormhole as it once more becomes a flashpoint of galactic history.

Brinkmanship
The Venette Convention has always remained independent, but it is about to become the flashpoint for a tense military standoff between the two power blocs now dominating interstellar space—the United Federation of Planets and the recently formed Typhon Pact. The Venetan government turns to the Typhon Pact’s Tzenkethi Coalition for protection in the new order, and has agreed to allow three of their supply bases for Tzenkethi use. But these bases—if militarized—would put Tzenkethi weapons unacceptably close to Federation, Cardassian, and Ferengi space. While Captain Ezri Dax and the crew of the U.S.S. Aventine are sent to investigate exactly what is happening at one of the Venette bases, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise are assigned to a diplomatic mission sent to the Venette homeworld in order to broker a mutually acceptable resolution. But the Cardassian delegates don’t seem particularly keen on using diplomacy to resolve the situation, which soon spirals out of control toward all-out war. . .

Bought and returned

I bought all three books separately, and pre-ordered this when it first came available...ie no description or picture. I highly recommend these books, and if you don't own any of them this is the route to go. Amazon now has a wonderful feature that allows you to return your kindle purchases, so if you made the same mistake I did, I encourage you to return it. But all three books in this collection are a required read for any true star trek fan.

Ignore the 1-star

Whoever wrote the review with one star obviously couldn't read as it is clear that this is a collection. The pictue with the names of all the books betrays this fact.

I highly recommend getting this if you have not yet read the series for the stories are great. Each book offers tremendous insight into non-Khitomer Accord species, such as the Gorn, Tzenkethi, and even the mysterious Breen.

Two must read titles with a dud mixed in.

The Khitomer Accords Saga can best be summed up as two good books and one dud.

The first two books, Plagues of Night and Raise the Dawn, are written as a two part adventure. This two parter is easily the strongest of all the Typhon Pact stories thus far. They tie in and acknowledge the major events of the other stories and then carry them to a satisfying conclusion. They also serve to rebuild the Deep Space 9 brand by reuniting most of the TV shows cast, leaving things in the position to continue forward in future DS9 books.

Heroes are reunited, villains receive their long due comeuppance, and the status quo is remolded to give shape to future of DS9 titles. Compared to other books in the Typhon Pact series, these two feel important. They carry a sense of long term weight that the other parts of the miniseries just don't have.

I give this three book set high marks for these two stories alone. They are definitely the must read stories of the Typhon Pact set.

That leaves us with Brinksmanship, a relatively stand alone story that doesn't actually relate much to the previous two and just isn't nearly as compelling.

Brinksmanship has three narratives running through them; the first is Picard trying to negotiate with some minor largely irrelevant species who are becoming uncomfortably close to the Tzenkethi, the second is Dax trying to confirm if the Tzenkethi are moving weapons to the border, and the third is the story of two unrelated spies as they try to escape the Tzenkethi homeworld.

Overall the three plots had potential to be interesting, but suffered from the lead characters only reacting to stuff that was happening around them rather than taking charge and actually accomplishing anything on their own. The new characters introduced also felt flat and uninteresting. Worst of all I came away disliking most of the supporting cast for their horrible behavior through most of the story.

Brinksmanship simply doesn't hold up compared to the other titles it is paired with.
