The End: A Story of Love and War in the Afterlife, by Paul Bryan Roach

U.S. Marine Captain Francis Xavier O'Rourke has a big problem: He is dying.  Afghanistan, gunfire, and a helicopter crash have left him in pieces. When Francis arrives into the afterlife --far from it being beatific and rather dull-- there still are people to meet, choices to make, battles to fight, and the possibility of annihilation all over again. If anything the ethereal world seems to be more intense than the material one.  Francis attaches to a special forces unit in Heaven, is intrigued and courted by demons and witches, meets a bold and lovely young woman named Deirdre who helps him understand and define who he wants to be, and why, and he falls in with his father, a military man as well, who asks him to leave heaven and infiltrate hell as a double-agent.
Adventurous, raw, thought-provoking, and inspirational, The End weaves several story lines and multiple literary genres into one exciting ride which will surprise you and keep the pages turning until the story is complete. When it's over you'll miss the characters and think about ordinary events in a new, extraordinary way.

FIVE STARS!

What is it like after you die? That is a question that burns in many peoples' minds and in The End: A Story of Love and War in the Afterlife by Paul Bryan Roach, the answer is simple - whatever you want. For Fran O'Rourke, getting killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan was actually just the beginning. Upon arriving at the unofficial headquarters of the secret ops group, the Roués, where he meets up with his father, Fran is brought into a new, even bigger war - between God and the devil. In his unique position as a brain dead Marine on life support, he and the other Roué operatives are able to infiltrate the ranks of the evil forces intent on interfering with the birth of a new Messiah. Convinced that mankind must be eliminated in order to save planet Earth, demons and hell-spirits do all they can to set man against man and destroy any chances of emotional and spiritual growth. In contrast, Fran, Deirdre and the whole crew strive to maintain the Glory of God and prevent Homo sapiens from falling into the void. In this eternal battle, who will come out on top?Paul Bryan Roach has created a completely believable alternate universe parallel to earth in which spirits 'live' their lives and keep watch over humans. The End: A Story of Love and War in the Afterlife is full of exciting action, but also presents deeply moving arguments about the nature of God, the Universe and man's place in it. Dealing with contemporary issues that are essentially timeless, Roach questions whether man will survive or destroy himself and the planet on which he lives. An excellent action story, The End is also a surprising love story with some interesting twists.

From the Author
I wrote the first draft of this book from my tent in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, during a seven month deployment there supporting the U.S. Marine Corps throughout Operation Moshtarak, the major military offensive to pacify that province in 2009-2010.That background context significantly influenced the shape and content of the book.  In a sentence I wanted to ensure that should I die, my family would have something encapsulating my world-view.  Writing this novel was extraordinarily pressured.  I shared a tent with 8-12 other men, I sat in a field chair and had an overturned plastic bucket as my desk, I stayed up nights clacking away, eagerly recording the ideas that cropped up during the day lest the intensity that forged them should cool before I could capture them in print. The second book I wrote was during my next deployment to Afghanistan, entitled "Citizen-Surgeon," and rather than a novel this was a non-fiction work, an account of that first deployment.

About the Author
Paul Bryan Roach is from Oak Park, Illinois, and received a B.A. in English from Loyola University of Chicago.  Subsequently he went to medical school and joined the U.S. Navy.  He specialized in General Surgery and sub specialized in Complex Oncologic Surgery.  In addition to serving in Asia as a flight surgeon and in Europe as a general surgeon he's deployed twice to Afghanistan (Helmand and Kandahar provinces) as a combat surgeon.  His writing influences are primarily American, British, Irish, and Russian authors.

Five Stars for Sheer Ambition
By StalkyReader
Five stars, but not just for ambition: also for the audacity to weave together action/adventure with paranormal, metaphysics, thriller, and a dash of science fiction thrown in. The End, by Paul Roach, is such a mixed bag of genres that at the start of it all this reader couldn't decide whether to scratch her head in confusion or nod in agreement. Turns out that by the time it was over, both impulses were correct

The End is the story of Fran O'Rourke, an all-around nice young man who is killed in Afghanistan while trying to pull off a rescue in the middle of a fierce firefight. It is the story of a happily married young woman who becomes deathly ill while pregnant with her first child. It is the story of good vs. evil, heaven and hell, and the fate of mankind as a sort of outcome depending on how the battle goes. And it is also the story of how much we, as human beings, have a part in that outcome. Have I lost anyone yet? The fact of the matter is, the author manages to pull all of this off without losing the reader, as intricately woven as the different strands may be.

The book starts off a bit slowly, building up steam as background for all the different subplots is presented to the reader. This gives the author, both a surgeon and a military man, ample space to utilize his expertise in both areas. There is enough combat and medical detail for working writers to use this as a reference work for certain types of scenarios. That being said, however, once the different stories do come together the pace picks up considerably and the acceleration rate doesn't drop until the climax of the book. After that, there remains a curious type of denouement to close out the tale that might almost seem extraneous, but only if one has read this book too lightly. The discussion at the end of the book is crucial to making sense of the entire work and what this author is trying to tell us: in The End, we're all of us in this together, long after our physical selves have quit the battlefield.

Readers of all different genres may find themselves caught up in this work: action/adventure and thriller fans, sci-fi aficionados, even those with a philosophical or metaphysical leaning. The book may be a bit quirky, but quirky can be a terrific thing when it's entertaining. Be aware, however, that this book, which asks and attempts to answer some of humanity's biggest questions, will make you stop and think.

And the war goes on...
By kjneedham
Loved this story from the first page. It is both original and authentic and has several layers from the War in Afghanistan to the spiritual realm of the afterlife. Unlike most books written by veterans of war, this story unfolds at a more spiritual level and gently reflects the human struggle to come to terms with age-old conflicts. All in all, a delightful read.

Read this book! It is GREAT!!
By Kathryn Lynn
I wholeheartedly loved this book – I read it in three couple hour sittings. The first chapter serves as a prologue without the formal title and once the story ended I wanted to know Samael and Adonai’s reactions to the events. It took some time to get through the prologue, but once I met Fran I did not want to stop reading the book! The multiple narrative perspectives allowed for easy communication of details and character development in a different way than most single-perspective books, when you often find yourself reading about the many colors in the leaves of a tree during fall and how it made the character feel for three pages…

As the story unfolded then came to an end, I found myself emotionally vested in Fran and his company – so I am hoping for a sequel!!! (to include more conversation between Samael and Adonai, and more falling in love for Fran) When Dr. Roach (aka Paul Bryan Roach) told me about this book, I instantly wanted to read it as he is such an intriguing person and I was not disappointed at all! You should read it – I guarantee your enjoyment.
