Mixed Feelings On This One
By PMSteve
Fledge is about a seventeen year old farm girl on a desert-like planet who is the first and only female to be drafted into an all-male military force (as an experiment).
Fiona Frost finds the experience to be intimidating but soon manages to gain the respect of her comrades because of her intelligence and her refusal to quit.
The problems that I have with the story is the protagonist's willingness to be easily lured into committing vandalism, theft, using drugs, and becoming involved in a sports cheating scam. Hardly the innocent little farm girl that the author portrays her as being.
Naturally the author glosses this all over to make it seem so innocent but this is what she in fact does.
It is an interesting story for all of that but ends suddenly in a cliffhanger with no doubt of a sequel. Reminds me of a modern version of "The Perils of Pauline". If you've never heard of that - go ask your Grandmother.

farm girl goes military
By Turtles
This was an interesting book. In the near future Earth has discovered other planets: one containing a friendly race, another containing an aggressive culture that kills everyone aboard a ship it passes, and the last planet Earth terraformed and colonized. This planet is Providence, it is broken into 6 Utopias (which you don't hear much about) and a center farming district. The farming lands are strangely backwards, despite all the adults/parents being directly from Earth, women have little role other than marriage and kids. But Fiona's Father didn't have any sons and he petitioned the government to let his daughter be a farm hand with a share of land. So Fiona grew up a bit alienated. They didn't imagine she would be conscripted into the Military, as all sons are for 1 year. But she is taken to a camp and appointed to a squad of soldiers. Since she is smart, she excels at the academics but is physically weak at physical training. Along the way she makes friends, enemies, and falls in love. At the end of service is a war games, of sorts, and Fiona has to go with her squad of misfits.
I liked the idea of the mixture of wild west/agriculture vs. space fighting, very Firefly/Serenity. But that women were so swiftly shoved into an inferior role, after barely 1 generation was a stretch. It would make more sense if the Great-grandparents or further were from Earth... but not that an entire community of adults reverted hundreds of years. I also found issue with the lack of technology, other than some clever elements from the new planet, there was little in the story. I also failed to see the usefulness of securing only a single year of services from every son, if you're just going to have them run around a camp. And after that year release the ones who don't want to stay while enlisting the others. Generally you train the soldiers to self-sustain the community with some sort of duty. It's a waste to have them do nothing for a bare year and be cut loose. I felt the aliens that we got a description of were too much like ones from the Avatar movie (sans tail). I think that the author didn't have a firm enough grasp where Fiona's character was going to go. She veered too far between being a missish farm girl and a soldier. I thought she'd have more backbone by the end of the book. The cliffhanger at the end was brutal and sudden.

Talented author draws you in with coming of age story
By Amazon Customer
I've read a lot of science fiction and fantasy and I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It brought me into its world and I was able to have a good cozy read with a work that is substantial (not a short story posing as a novel). Especially when you compare it to other free, self-published ebooks out there this one is a stand out for several reasons: excellent character building - solid plotting - and the high quality writing.
The basic plot other reviewers have detailed: it's a military, space opera, coming-of-age storyline. Farm girl that doesn't fit in is selected to be the first female in an all male military training camp because humans are fighting mysterious aliens. For those who wrote that women's status wouldn't have gone down this far in such a short period of time, I have to write that my feeling was the world was already settled by a conservative religious group that selected an agrarian, low tech lifestyle.
Greenhorns' writing ability - wow! She really has the gift and again this is something that is hard to find with authors that are self publishing. Her story drew me in and I really settled into her world, Fiona's character, and how she beat the odds that were against her. This is an author I have put on my "must-watch" list as the other books I read by her shows she is clearly improving as she hones her craft.
A few have complained that there is a cliffhanger ending. Anyone who has read space opera books will know that it's not uncommon for them to end with a cliffhanger or a continuing myth-arc although I agree that too many self-publishing authors are publishing "serials" (aka short chapters) to con us into buying. This would disturb me more if this book wasn't novel length (it is) and didn't offer a fully fleshed out story of our adolescent farm girl coming of age story. The events, her friendships and training is all completed by this end of this book one so in that area I did get a complete story. I could have done without the love story angle but considering what happens in book two, I think I can see why it was put in there.
Note: author please get a better cover to this book. I almost didn't download it because the book cover looked like some 1970 story about a woman who was either in a mental institute or was going to die in six months and had to tell her love story. This cover implies nothing that is science fiction, space opera, intergalactic strife, or militaristic.
What is a bit off-putting with this two book series is what happens in Book 2 (which I will review there). You will either love it or hate it IMO.
