Good book, waiting for the next

This is another good book from Larson. If you've read his other books, you will enjoy this, as you'll recognize his style and sci-fi theme. I like that he keeps the story moving throughout. He is able to set the scene and characters while keeping a steady flow of action. This is probably why some people think the characters lack some depth. Perhaps that's true, but I prefer to learn about the characters through their actions and decisions during the story rather than drawn out pages of boring back stories. That's clearly a personal preference, but the main reason I always look forward to his books.

Below expectations

It really pains me to have to write this negative review, because this is the first book by B.V. Larson that I just couldn't get into and like. I can't say that the book is terrible, but I just couldn't find anything that grabbed my attention or imagination and made me care about the story. I didn't really care about any of the characters either, because they had not been brought to life the way the author normally does. To me the characters were just stick figures with names, one dimensional, and not really believable. On the other side of the ledger, the bad guys(Aliens?)are just not that scary. It's very murky as to who the bad guys actually are anyway. Is it the agency(XCU) that seems to be somewhat corrupt, the other teams working with and yet against everybody else, the big bad aliens who's agenda we never get to see, or the greedy world governments? There just seems to be a general unfocused nature to the story and characters that left me not wanting more. All that being said, I am not disappointed in the author. I just see this book as a minor bump in the road for B.V. Larson. You just can't expect a home run every time you step to the plate. I bought this book, and would do it again because I want to support the author. I just don't think it's one of his better works.

Element-X

This is the first book review I've ever written so please forgive my brevity. First, I'm a huge B.V. Larson fan - the Starforce series is hands down one of my favorites and Element-X does not disappoint. Without giving too much away, I found the premise for this novel viable and the storytelling vivid. What I like most about Larson's writing is the vivid imagery he is able to convey. I felt like I was in the swamp and the ship - please continue this series!
