Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The editors kept Armstrong's voice true to the legend and honest in its depictions of his sometimes harsh life in New Orleans. However, Artmstrong's sense of humor and goodness shine through his story and the reader really learns to like him as a person as well as a great musician. As a native New Orleanian, I really enjoyed his descriptions of the city during that time. I look forward to reading this book again!

Like pulling up an armchair and jawin' with Louis

What shines through this recollection of Louis Armstrong's youth in New Orleans is the essential positive outlook this man seems to have been born with despite the hardship of his early years. This "life-force' for lack of a better term is what drove his musicianship to such heights that he is the most revered American musician of the 20th century. While this is no scholalry biography it is written with the feel of an oral history and reading it is much like having Satch relate these tales over a few drinks. Not only does it shed much light on the real person that Louis Armstrong was but it also reflects an era in old New Orleans that is absolutely fascinating to read about in the words of someone who lived there. This is a hugely enjoyable book on numerous levels and for fans of Armstrong it is indispensible.

All With A Smile

Love Loius Armstrong? How could you not? This is his childhood in New Orleans in Satchmo's own words. The reading is as colorful as his music, full of vitality and fun. Satchmo's take on life is clearly illustrated in this book. He greets life with a smile and takes troubles all with a smile. This book is an absolute joy to read. I can hear the music and feel the energy of those days in New Orleans by looking at the old photo on the cover. Young Louis Armstrong grew up dirt poor. But young Satchmo even as a young boy faced the world with a smile. His neighborhood nickname was, "Dipper" and at different times lived with his mother and her lovers (whom Louis called his, 'step-dads'), the Colored Waifs Home for Boys where he became the bugler and then leader of the band, and eventually, with his father. The passage where Louis describes how he became to play the cornet at the Colored Waifs Home for Boys is touching. I read as if I were sitting in a movie theater. Life in New Orleans was colorful and dangerous. Louis lived among the 'sportin' life -- pimps, prostitutes, honky-tonks, gambling, violence, and of course, music. Louis Satchmo Armstrong found his inspiration in this extraoridnary environment to become not only the most seminal figure in jazz in the twentieth century, but a most beloved man. Read this book slowly, you will want it to last.

I was having a panic attack and now I know what to do about it

Before I read this helpful little book I would have denied I'd ever had a panic attack. But the book made me think about coming home from 9 days in the hospital recently recuperating from heart surgery. I woke up in the middle of the first night home unable to breath. It was one of the signs I was told to look for and call the paramedics if it persisted. A friend was sleeping on the couch to help in an emergency and I was about to call for her when I realized I was hyperventilating. It took me a while longer to realize that this was my first night with no nurses checking on me and no machines to monitor every breath and heartbeat. I was very weak and sick and yes, as I look back on that awful night, it was a panic attack. I always imagined a panic attack would be some wild freaking out episode, but in my quiet, terrified way, I couldn't breathe properly because I was in a panic that something would happen to me. I keep my difficult emotions under wrap so it makes sense that I would have a "quiet" panic attack. I looked up breathing exercises on my ipad rather than wake my friend. They helped but did not completely resolve the problem but just realizing that it was my emotions or brain triggering my problem helped me cope. Eventually I fell asleep. The attacks recurred over the next couple of weeks and as I got stronger the eventually subsided. But I have had them all my adult life and now I have to confront the issue that I do have panic attacks.

I found this book extremely well written and helpful, encouraging and supportive without diminishing my problem. There are so many remedies in addition to breathing exercises--not everyone hyperventilates. The most helpful recommendation was to try to relax because you can't be relaxed and panicked at the tame time. That is so logical and so helpful. The author gives case histories of people with many varieties of attacks. After a full discussion of the causes and remedies, we meet those first people and discover how they overcame and managed their panic attacks. If you or anyone you love suffers from this condition, keep this book by your bedside. Easy ready but oh so helpful and important.

How can you tell if it's an anxiety attack?

I was really concerned about a child I know who seems quite anxious.
"It's nothing, really," his mother said. "Just wants attention..."
but I wasn't so sure so I did a bit of looking around and found this
book.

Like many Kindle books, it's a fast read, very focussed and easy to
read - I zipped through it in a couple of hours. Next time I saw that
mother, I knew enough to be able to just casually suggest that had she
ever wondered if her son might be fearful and having panic attacks?

She wasn't exactly pleased, but she did agree to just have a look at
this book, and one of the stories it tells must have struck a cord
with her, because she told me her son "is getting help now," - this
book tells you what's available and what seems to work.

A lot of parents don't realize how common panic attacks are among
children - we tend to think of it more as a 'teenager thing' and I
know other parents who just dismiss it as 'teen drama' but, from what
this author says, that's simply not true.

Panic or anxiety is very real, and if you suspect it could be the
issue, this book is very helpful, without getting bogged down in all
the medical stuff or psychology, you get a good, quick understanding
to help you get help and make decisions.

Great Stuff

I am a big fan of the authors 1999 book on Statistical Natural Language Processing, and I and was thrilled when I found this new book online -- just search for "Information Retrieval" on Google.

In these two books, they describe the theory behind a vast toolbox which can be used to construct new tools/products for the Internet. Now I can go back to them when the need arises.

For starters, I appreciate the detailed theoretical explanations of topics that I could not find in other texts, and the references to related work are especially helpful. One of the other books I read was Information Retrieval by Grossman, which is an older book but has a more condensed style compared to this. Grossman's discussion of clustering was more high level and referenced a few more papers that I found useful. That helped increase my interest to read through these chapters in which offer greater detail.

Before I felt like I could place each topic in its appropriate context, I had to spend six months of reading both the books, playing with code and finding s/w packages, searching the research literature, reading papers and other books, and then cycling back to the books. Here's are some suggestions for things I'd like to see:

1. A set of recomended programming tools: in some books on Perl -- such as the chapter "Natural Language Tools" in pages 149-171 in "Advanced Perl Programming" by Simon Cozens (O'Reilly) -- you get a very "quick & dirty" introduction to maybe 20-30% of the concepts in these two books along with ways to implement and play around with them. Although Perl has many natural language processing tools, the Cozens book cuts to the chase, explains which are the best tools, and shows you how to use them. I think knowing such shortcuts aids in learning how to apply and improve on them. The more complex and sophisticated topics, the more likely to make it out into the real world if they are easy to play with.

2. More data/examples on what does/doesn't work with end-users: Numbers, graphs, and charts are all good stuff. I always appreciate it when the authors referenced quantitative comparisons, real-world products, and history of Internet. One of the reasons I had to consult the research literature was to broaden my understanding of quantitative comparisons between different techniques involving end-users, which were typically done in the context of complete systems studies that users could try out.

My new favorite book on search

Managing Gigabytes used to be my favorite book on search, but it is getting quite dated as this point. This new book is by three search gurus, Chris Manning, Prabhakar Raghavan (head of Yahoo Research), and Hinrich Schutze, and the depth of their expertise shows.

This book not only describes how to build a search engine (including crawling, indexing, ranking, classification, and clustering), but also has many of the insights you can only get from lengthy experience using these techniques at large scale.

Definitely my new favorite book on search. If you work in search or just have an interest in the field, it is a great read.

Nice Introduction Text

The company I was working for started using Elastic search (which is built on top of Lucene), so I had to dive into details of Lucene pretty deeply. Since I had no prior background in Information Retrieval field, I decided to learn the theory first and picked up this book for that purpose. This book is a nice introductory text on Information Retrieval covering a lot of ground from index construction including posting lists, tolerant retrieval, different types of queries (boolean, phrase etc), scoring, evalution of information retrieval systems, feedback mechanisms, classifcations, clustering and crawling. Overall I liked the authors presentation style in this book. The concepts are presented very clearly for the most part. With the exception of a few chapters, it's not too math heavy, so it's suited for a wider audience from that perpsective. Web crawling chapters although small are really good. This book is written such that each chapter can be covered in one lecture, so it's nice from instructor's stand point as well. This book is the text used in some schools for Information Retrieval class. You actually don't have to buy this book since it's available online for free (although the page numbers don't match exactly, so if you are taking a class and instructor refers to a certain page, it could be a different page number on the online version). I only skipped a few chapters (Chapter 18 Latent Semantic Indexing for example) but otherwise read the book from cover to cover. It took me two months to read this book but it was well worth it. When I was done, I felt like I had a good understanding of foundations of Information Retrieval field. Since then I looked into Lucene details (using Lucene in Action) and it not only made a lot more sense but actually more enjoyable. Highly recommended without any reservation.

As all William Barclay's commentary's they are very good for preaching and teaching. They are usually pretty much the same quality as the last or the next. They are better for the teacher and otherwise learner than for the theologian. Barclay writes from the overflow of his extensive learning. Even the dedicated theologian can learn something for his writing.

Monumental

Shelley is one of the greatest poets of all time; a true master. This collection proves my boast in it's fullness and absolute gravity. I know not of any missing works, and I must say that this is the most complete collection I have discovered. It is absolutely worth the very small price and will pay for itself time and time again as you delve into the genius that is Shelley.

I am quite the Shelley fan, both the Shelleys, and I feel Mary is muchly underrated; a brilliant woman who was exceedingly progressive for her time, for any time really. This collection is a gem. All of Shelley's works in my Kindle. It is beautiful to walk to the park, sit under my favorite tree, feel the sun, hear the birds, bare feet in the grass, and allow his verse to transport the mind into the true eternal unfathomable spiritual aspect of Nature. He can communicate to us, the experience of the Divine Poetic Consciousness, and allow us a glimpse into what we might otherwise never perceive. His verse can be as the essence of sunlight itself, Nature itself. He is more than genius, he is a channel for the Divine to manifest in word.

Shelley never gets old ! His poetry is timeless and beautiful . Very well put together and priced to sell ! If you love his work you will add this one to your collection !
