I was having a panic attack and now I know what to do about it

Before I read this helpful little book I would have denied I'd ever had a panic attack. But the book made me think about coming home from 9 days in the hospital recently recuperating from heart surgery. I woke up in the middle of the first night home unable to breath. It was one of the signs I was told to look for and call the paramedics if it persisted. A friend was sleeping on the couch to help in an emergency and I was about to call for her when I realized I was hyperventilating. It took me a while longer to realize that this was my first night with no nurses checking on me and no machines to monitor every breath and heartbeat. I was very weak and sick and yes, as I look back on that awful night, it was a panic attack. I always imagined a panic attack would be some wild freaking out episode, but in my quiet, terrified way, I couldn't breathe properly because I was in a panic that something would happen to me. I keep my difficult emotions under wrap so it makes sense that I would have a "quiet" panic attack. I looked up breathing exercises on my ipad rather than wake my friend. They helped but did not completely resolve the problem but just realizing that it was my emotions or brain triggering my problem helped me cope. Eventually I fell asleep. The attacks recurred over the next couple of weeks and as I got stronger the eventually subsided. But I have had them all my adult life and now I have to confront the issue that I do have panic attacks.

I found this book extremely well written and helpful, encouraging and supportive without diminishing my problem. There are so many remedies in addition to breathing exercises--not everyone hyperventilates. The most helpful recommendation was to try to relax because you can't be relaxed and panicked at the tame time. That is so logical and so helpful. The author gives case histories of people with many varieties of attacks. After a full discussion of the causes and remedies, we meet those first people and discover how they overcame and managed their panic attacks. If you or anyone you love suffers from this condition, keep this book by your bedside. Easy ready but oh so helpful and important.

How can you tell if it's an anxiety attack?

I was really concerned about a child I know who seems quite anxious.
"It's nothing, really," his mother said. "Just wants attention..."
but I wasn't so sure so I did a bit of looking around and found this
book.

Like many Kindle books, it's a fast read, very focussed and easy to
read - I zipped through it in a couple of hours. Next time I saw that
mother, I knew enough to be able to just casually suggest that had she
ever wondered if her son might be fearful and having panic attacks?

She wasn't exactly pleased, but she did agree to just have a look at
this book, and one of the stories it tells must have struck a cord
with her, because she told me her son "is getting help now," - this
book tells you what's available and what seems to work.

A lot of parents don't realize how common panic attacks are among
children - we tend to think of it more as a 'teenager thing' and I
know other parents who just dismiss it as 'teen drama' but, from what
this author says, that's simply not true.

Panic or anxiety is very real, and if you suspect it could be the
issue, this book is very helpful, without getting bogged down in all
the medical stuff or psychology, you get a good, quick understanding
to help you get help and make decisions.

Something everyone will deal with

Panic attacks will happen to you most likely. Even if it's not recurring or often there are times when your worry will grow quickly for unexpected reasons. Each tip in this book is worth the cover price easily. This book will teach you how to at least know the best ways to prevent or shorten the duration of a panic attack.
