Review
"With My Year as a Clown Robert Steven Williams has written a terrific novel. His book pulls back the curtain on male masculinity--showing us what a guy really goes through when dealing with the difficult mess of his beloved spouse's infidelity and the ensuing divorce. Williams' characters give us the real-deal: a gut wrenching and often humourous look, showing us the everyday horrors of what it's like to start all over again as one approaches middle age." - Suzan-Lori Parks, novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Winner, 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Topdog/Underdog
"Robert Steven Williams has written a novel of tremendous honesty, humor, and insight. His story of Philadelphia Eagles-loving Chuck Morgan, cast adrift on the rocky shoals of dating when his wife of twenty years suddenly leaves him, does for men what Bridget Jones's Diary did for women." - Joy Johannesen, editor for Alice Sebold, Amy Bloom, Michael Cunningham and My Year as a Clown
When we first meet Chuck Morgan, the main character in Robert Steven Williams' new novel, My Year as a Clown, he's broken, twisted and confused. And that's what makes him so interesting. Like other intriguing literary heroes, Chuck is at his best after life has knocked him to the ground, forcing him to find a new way to be strong again; damaged maybe, but more confident this time, with a kinder, more open heart." - Jimmie Dale Gilmore, singer-songwriter, founding member of The Flatlanders
From the Back Cover
When his wife of twenty years leaves him for another man, Chuck Morgan is abruptly forced back into the single lifestyle. Middle-aged and helplessly adrift, Chuck longs for the life he thought he had. Now he worries he'll never have a relationship again, that he could stand in the lobby of a brothel with a hundred dollar bill plastered to his forehead and still not get laid. My Year as a Clown is the story of one man's fumbling, funny, emotionally raw year of relearning to live on his own, a year that presents a minefield of new issues to navigate, including a lost job, awkward dates, even more awkward sex, and the spiritual advice of an offbeat, marijuana-smoking rabbi. As his life starts to unravel, Chuck must overcome his phobias and find his place in the unfamiliar world before him.
Smartly comic and darkly entertaining, Robert Steven Williams' My Year As A Clown introduces a new kind of male hero that fans of Nick Hornby and Jonathan Tropper are sure to embrace.

A very compelling read -- funny, sad and utterly believable
By Liz
Launched into the world of the newly single, Chuck takes us along for the ride as he makes the painful separation from his wife and finds his feet as a single man. The characters are believable and, at times, infuriating.
You root for Chuck to find happiness and also want to give a hug to some of the women in the story who seem to be adrift.
I think that Williams' book gives voice to a life experience that is not often portrayed in fiction and does so with a touching mix of humor and compassion.

A Read for Men and Women
By Rebecca Graf
Chuck finds himself hit with the fact his wife has found someone else and is leaving him. After twenty years of marriage, Chuck is left confused and stumbling about to get his life in order. The reader follows Chuck through a year of recovery and getting back on his feet.
This was a unique book that was an interesting read. I have to admit that. Not many emotional books come from the man's point of view. What I mean by emotional is not that he is crying on every page but that he is exploring himself and his marriage. He has to face not only what his wife did but aspects of the problems he helped to create. On top of all that, I feel for the guy because of family and friends. Yes, they have good intentions, but stop trying to get him involved with someone when he just got uninvolved! That drove me nuts, but it happens in real life. If the author hadn't put those scenes in there, it would be too unreal even for fiction.
This is not a read that you will pick up and not be able to put down, yet it will keep you wondering what he will do next. Will he call his gym buddy's friend for a date? Will he have a second date? Will he finally get the divorce finalized?
I did like this book. I couldn't relate to most of it, but it had me wanting to continue and had me thinking deeply about many of the things that happened to him. This is one book I think most will either recommend to others or not like at all. If you like chick-lit kind of books, this is one you might enjoy. The fact that is from the man's point of view makes it a possibility for men and women to read and enjoy. I do suggest you checking out this.

I loved this toucing, and funny intimate portayal of love and betrayal and the aftemath of a divorce.
By jeanie
I loved reading this very touching and funny book. The characters are quirky and endearingly funny in the eye of their honesty and intimacy. Robert Steven Williams captures the searing heartbreak of a love smashed to bits in a divorce with humor and grace.
I could not help but identify with the main character, Chuck, as Williams takes you through the day to day aftermath of loss and impending divorce and the sometimes hilarious interpersonal escapades that can accompany it.
I love that, aside from the humor, there is woven in this story a very beautiful (and universal) thread of truth that is ultimately revealed at the end of the main character, Chuck's first year after the break-up of his marriage.
