It’s all very odd, really, as we were friends for so long, but as of today I have not spoken to Emma for almost four years. We live in the same city – her home city – and see each other several times a week on the school run. Far from stopping for a quick chat as we would have done in the past, I avert my gaze from her and pass quickly and awkwardly, hoping that my son doesn’t run into her with his scooter.
The reason for our fall out?
Emma has evolved into a full blown narcissist, so toxic that I simply couldn’t bare for me or my child to be subjected to her anymore. I have been warned by others, and it is also my own personal feeling, that the situation has even (potentially) become a matter of our personal safety!

maybe I misunderstood the premise

This was a free book, but I thought that this series of stories was intended to help a person navigate through difficult relationships with narcissists and maybe offer some helpful suggestions. I have only read this one volume, so all that I have to go on is Jen's Story.
To be honest, it just read like a complaint session to a close friend. There was a lot of finger pointing and generally trying to get the reader to agree with her assertion - sort of like "See? She's crazy! Don't you think she's crazy?!" which is fine, but not what I was expecting. I was expecting to get some insight into "this is how I coped" or "this is how I cut her out of my life" which it didn't really. Yes, she did eventually cut the woman out of her life, but she continues to let the woman effect her -- even active avoidance is still allowing the person some power -- so it wasn't really helpful in that regard.

This is not what I expected at all. You are reading the story as written. The author wrote the article using "I, me", writing it as the events were happening, but not much detail to the events. I needed a book that would help me see the narcissist view clearer, not tell me what a narcissist is.

I had to endure a narcissistic person.... that being my own mother. She had me convinced I was a bad child and I actually believed her. She LATER convinced us to get a house together and then tried to destroy us. I really thought it was all my fault as a kid, but as an adult after living with her saw it was actually her with the problem. Anyhow I had to get her out of my life and its been 14 years and I know I did the right thing.
Anyhow, I didn't know if she was a sociopath or narcissistic. person sin e she actually tried to destroy us, our finances, our children, and my business that was located in our home.
This book is an eye opener. Thank you for taking the time to write it. Maybe someday I will write what I went through.
