About the Author
James Fenton was born in Lincoln in 1949 and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford where he won the Newdigate Prize for poetry. He has worked as political journalist, drama critic, book reviewer, war correspondent, foreign correspondent and columnist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was Oxford Professor of Poetry for the period 1994-99. In 2007, James Fenton was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. He is editor of The New Faber Book of Love Poems. Yellow Tulips: Poems 1968-2011 was published by Faber and Faber in 2012.

Avoid the Kindle version

The Kindle version has no formatting. I was reading and couldn't understand what was going on until I realized that the character names and the dialogue are all merged together and it takes some work to decipher who is speaking and what they're saying.

I have read a number of sales books, but found The Cold Calling Secret to be more helpful than most. What I specifically liked about the book is that it gave very specific and relevant examples. I find that many books sound good in theory, but once you try to put them into practice they fall down completely. The book is packed with great sales techniques. I constantly refer back to it. I sell senior executives in large corporation and have found The Cold calling Secret an invaluable guide. I highly recommend the book for any salesperson, new or experienced.

Amazingly helpful, even for someone in a non-sales job

This book has changed the way I work, and opened my eyes to effective communication. I'm a teacher, so I don't have many chances to do "cold calling," but this book isn't just about that. It's an outline for how to make anyone better at presenting ideas, effectively persuading others, preparing for doing your job right, and understanding the way that sales (which drives so much of our lives today) really works.

Mark Boardman is a master salesman, and he lays out both his techniques and the techniques that have been shown to be most effective through research studies. Just the chapter that analyzes the research would be worth buying the book for, because it shows what most of us can do to quickly change our approaches and be more effective. The script sections weren't as useful for me since I'm not in sales, but I still learned a lot from reading them.

If you want to improve your communication and better understand what makes effective communicators and salespeople so effective, this is the book for you.

Great book for first timers

I am relatively new to sales, and I am tasked with cold calling and finding potential clients on my own. Being new to sales, I found it was, pardon the cliche, easier said then done. After reading this book I can confidently say that I have learned some new techniques that I am excited to put in to practice. I would say that anyone starting in Sales, and responsible to find their own leads should read this book.

But this is not just a political novel; the characters are fully developed, ones with whom the reader can empathize. Although set at the time of the Gulf War, the basic message is just as relevant today, especially as the secret flow of arms is aggravating and indeed prolonging the Syrian civil war. For those who want to understand the true nature of modern politics, and the cynical machinations of intelligence agencies, who use people, then throw them away, this book is for you! I read the paperback a few years ago, when it was out of print, but am now heartened to see that it is available as a Kindle edition.

Enjoyable book, terrible reprint

This is a rambling but amusing autobiographical tale of George Borrow, as he meanders through Portugal, Spain, Gibralter, and the Barbary Coast. Although his ostensible mission is to distribute New Testaments (not full Bibles), it is clear he is also going out of his way to amuse himself. Borrow speaks virtually every language, and, as such, manages to travel through a country torn by civil war and rampant banditry without ever getting in serious trouble (his impisonment for distributing testaments not withstanding).
Unfortunately, this volume printed by IndyPublish.com is clearly a download from Project Guternberg or another website. It has CAPITALS where it should have italics, the formatting is poor for a reading book (gaps between the paragraphs rather than indents), and, most offensive, instead of a few passages in Greek, it has the words [Greek text which cannot be reproduced.] There are a dozen typographic errors. The margins are poorly laid out (the bottom margin should be larger than the top, not the other way around). Frankly, it looks almost as if the publisher didn't even proof the copy before sending it to press.
This volume is NOT worth the cover price. If you can find it published by any other source, the book is worth reading. If not, download it and read it that way -- at least you won't have the affront of having paid good money for a lazily produced volume.

Early 19th Century Spain

Borrow travels all over Spain in the early 19th century with the aim of selling and setting up the printing of bibles to give the Spanish the holy word without any Catholic inter mediation. He viewed his book as something of a guidebook noting to bring some food if you stop at an inn. They'll cook it for you but they won't give you any. Also make sure that you are armed as you will certainly be shot at and if the number of flies round your horses becomes impossible then put bags over their heads.

Executive Outcomes in Action!

"Four Ball One Tracer: Commanding Executive Outcomes in Angola and Sierra Leone" by Roelf van Heerden as told to Andrew Hudson. This book covers operations by Executive Outcomes (EO) which was a private military company founded in South Africa in 1989. It later became part of the South African-based holding company Strategic Resource Corporation. EO provided military personnel, training and logistical support to officially recognized governments only. Where assistance was given to corporations in conflict areas, EO had the host government's approval to provide such assistance.

EO initially trained and later fought on behalf of the Angolan government against National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) after UNITA refused to accept the election results in 1992. In a short space of time, UNITA was defeated on the battlefield by EO and sued for peace.

In March 1995, the company contained an insurrection of guerrillas known as the Revolutionary United Front in Sierra Leone, regained control of the diamond fields, and forced a negotiated peace. Although a mercenary, van Heerden is actually a modern day private military contractor.

He and his men are professionals, do what they are trained to do and actually love their profession.

It is also impressive to see the ground commander in his armoured fighting vehicle at the head of his fighting column prosecuting the task himself.

It is noteworthy what a trained military professional with a few hundred good men can actually achieve in a relatively short time and with only a modicum of support from his hosts and clients.

Now Colonel van Heerden has taken to policing the oceans off East Africa and just recently achieved a very major success against Somali pirates with very few casualties.

I discovered Von Balthasar several years ago in my Christian journey. His writings are like music to me, filling my heart with love for God and his word. Reading him has always led me to worship God, sometimes falling on my knees in wonder and adoration. It seems to me that that is what theology should give us.
