About the Author
Dr. Kyle Smith (D.O., Ph.D., F.A.C.P.) is the Medical Director of Vascular Access Center Southwest Louisiana, Lafayette and a Staff Physician at the Vascular Access Centers of New Orleans, LA, North Shore, LA. and Houston, TX. He is a Consulting Physician at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and LTAC of Acadiana in Lafayette, LA. He was a partner with the Dallas Nephrology Associates before taking on his current duties. Smith also was an Emergency Room Staff Physician for 7 years before specializing in Nephrology (Kidney Function). His first bookER Confessional was a witty and poignant look at patients in the ER and his experiences during those years. His new release Call Nights is one doctor's journey through residency, fellowship, and private practice, along with a tribute to the Mentor that helped him become a better doctor and a better human being. He grew up in Dallas, TX, is the father of four children and enjoys hunting and fishing on his days off.

Call Nights: A Doctor Tells All

Last week, I met with a local publisher who represents a number of authors. One of her clients is Dr. Kyle Smith, who has penned two books about the art, science and life lessons of doctoring.
Today, I started reading his second book, Amazon.com best-seller "Call Nights: Just Don't Hurt Anybody!"
I couldn't stop grinning.
In "Call Nights," Hawkeye, uh, I mean Dr. Smith presents a ribald and, at times, touching perspective of a medical career spanning from "wedge" intern to private practice.
In his book, Smith humorously recalls the finer points of doctor-nurse, doctor-patient and doctor-doctor relationships. How to gain an extra hour of shut-eye while in residency. Creative means to sneak in a six pack. And imaginative ways to destroy the cursed doctor's pager.
All while performing life-saving and, at times, brilliant patient care.
Call nights in the ER are first introduced to third-year medical students. In the beginning, writes Smith, call nights are considered "way cool" because the student is granted a first glimpse into the "real word" of doctoring. By the time the med student graduates to intern, however, the novelty has worn off; call nights devolves into the "unsexy part" of being a doctor.
Still, Smith approves of the nerve-racking, sleep-deprived strain of call nights. For him, the experience resulted in life-long friendships; lasting memories; and excellent, think-on-your-feet skills in patient care.
Dr. Smith was raised near my childhood home in a blue-collar neighborhood called "the Grove". His younger sister and I were high school friends. Even though Smith has enjoyed a successful career as a vascular surgeon, he has never forgotten his roots. "Call Nights" features the brilliant doc at his earthy-but-compassionate, Grove-Rattiest best.
If you are seeking the next "Great American Novel," this isn't the book for you. But if you enjoy a light-hearted, medical-themed read, you'll love "Call Nights".

This book about the medical training ok Kyle Smith was interesting, you could tell how he matured into a caring doctor over the years. Seems as though he didn't have a clue what he was getting into for a couple of years into his training. I was appalled at his intimation that most all nurses were only there to snag a doctor to marry or have fun with. I was a nurse for many years and did NOT see this kind of behavior between the nurses and the doctors. Most all were dedicated to the care of the patients. This is not a field you can just enter into to have fun. Anyway, I think he may be growing into an adequate medical person. Took him long enough.

More real than "Grey's Anatomy "......

I have no idea why this is classified as Southern Medical Humor. The anecdotes in Smith's book could have happened in any part of the United States , to any physician in training. I have 2 medical professionals in my immediate family, and I laughed out loud, and READ out loud to them. Although Dr.Smith's writing rambled around a bit, I enjoyed it. This is good reading for anyone who wants to understand what doctors and all medical professionals are experiencing , as they struggle to take care of people in emergent and continuous situations, who often will not or cannot take care of themselves.
